Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, emphasized at a Tuesday press conference that decisions on recognizing governments fall within the authority of individual countries, and the UN itself has no role in this process. He said, “The decisions regarding recognition are made by governments; we are not that entity. Governments determine who they recognize as the government of a country.”<\/p>\n
According to Haq, no decision has been made regarding the recognition of the Taliban administration to date, and as far as he knows, there is no ongoing process among UN member states to move in that direction.<\/p>\n
Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, no country except Russia has formally recognized its administration. The UN refers to the Taliban as the “de facto authorities.”<\/p>\n
