In response to growing concerns over extensive land contamination by mines and explosives, a $465,152 agreement has been signed to clear 25 million square meters of land in the provinces of Kabul and Logar.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, August 4th, the Taliban’s National Disaster Management Authority announced that this agreement was signed with the Omar Mine Clearance Institute. According to the terms, contaminated areas in Khak-e-Jabar district of Kabul and the Mes Aynak area in Mohammad Agha district of Logar will be cleared of mines and unexploded ordnance.<\/p>\n
The Taliban authority stated that approximately 969,000 people will directly and indirectly benefit from the project. The cleared lands will then be prepared for residential, economic, and agricultural use.<\/p>\n
This agreement has been signed while Afghanistan remains among the most heavily mine-contaminated countries in the world. This long-standing issue continues to threaten the lives of residents, especially children and farmers.
