The local administration of Ceuta has reported that the death toll following the massive influx of migrants into this Spanish African territory has risen to 72, with more than a thousand others receiving medical treatment.<\/p>\n
According to Reuters, Miguel \u00c1ngel P\u00e9rez, the Spanish government representative in Ceuta, said on Sunday (August 2) that the situation has somewhat improved compared to the early days, but efforts to address the aftermath of the incident are ongoing.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Juan Jes\u00fas Vivas, the head of the Ceuta local government, told the newspaper El Pais that the city’s morgue has received 88 bodies. Reuters notes that this figure includes not only the casualties from the two-day influx but also migrants who have died at sea and at the borders over the past two weeks. According to him, several migrants drowned while climbing the breakwater and the border fence, and others were trampled in the crowd surge.<\/p>\n
The report states that between 50,000 and 60,000 people from Morocco entered Ceuta during the last two days of the previous week, a number that the Moroccan government estimates at around 40,000. Of these, more than 48,000 were returned within the first 48 hours, all of whom were Moroccan citizens, although hundreds of migrants from other African countries remain in the city.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Spanish authorities said that 1,135 people attempted to enter Melilla, another Spanish African territory, but retreated after clashes with local police. This influx followed a ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court that migrants arriving to Ceuta and Melilla by sea should not be immediately expelled without identity verification and asylum application review.<\/p>\n
