Following the arrival of around 60,000 migrants in Ceuta and the deaths of at least 67 people, the Spanish government has begun installing a 500-meter floating barrier at the maritime border of this territory with Morocco. Spanish authorities announced on Saturday that migrant crossings had stopped overnight. According to official statistics, tens of thousands entered Ceuta via sea and land since Thursday; the area is one of the few land borders between the European Union and the African continent.<\/p>\n
The Spanish government stated that over 48,000 of these individuals have been returned to Morocco within 48 hours. Videos released by Reuters show Spanish police and soldiers patrolling the Tarajal beach, which had been the main crossing point for migrants in recent days.<\/p>\n
According to a government statement, civil guard police began installing the floating barrier on the Tarajal breakwater at 7:50 a.m. The structure is designed to sit between 30 to 70 centimeters above the water surface and extend up to one meter below it. It also includes a channel to allow civil guard boats to pass.<\/p>\n
This crisis has sparked widespread concern across the European Union. Twenty-two member states have called in a letter for coordinated action to protect the EU\u2019s external borders. Ireland, holding the EU\u2019s rotating presidency, has announced an emergency virtual meeting of interior ministers.<\/p>\n
