While Afghanistan continues to source a large portion of its electricity from abroad, Uzbekistan has announced plans to prepare a comprehensive 15-year program to develop Afghanistan’s energy sector. This was discussed in a joint meeting between officials from Afghanistan’s electricity company and Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Energy.<\/p>\n
The press office of the Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat stated that the meeting was chaired by Mullah Abdul Haq Hamkar, CEO of Afghanistan’s electricity company, and attended by Umid Muhammad Aminov, First Deputy Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan. According to the office, the discussion covered the expansion of strategic cooperation, preparation of a joint energy roadmap, and acceleration of the 500-kilovolt Surkhan-Pul-e Khumri electricity transmission project.<\/p>\n
Officials from Uzbekistan\u2019s Ministry of Energy stated that their cooperation would not be limited to electricity exports but would also include production, transmission, distribution, technical studies, and project design. They emphasized that after completing technical and feasibility studies, the technical specifications and cost estimates for priority projects would be shared with Afghanistan’s electricity company.<\/p>\n
Mullah Abdul Haq Hamkar also noted that Afghanistan needs a clear roadmap for the development of the energy sector and comprehensive studies on hydropower, solar, gas, and coal projects must be conducted. He added that the Taliban administration’s goal is not only to import electricity but also to develop domestic production and distribution capacities.<\/p>\n
The two sides emphasized speeding up the implementation of the 500-kilovolt Surkhan-Pul-e Khumri electricity transmission project and establishing joint working groups during the meeting.
