The European Union has called for an urgent and coordinated response from Brussels to address the recent crisis in the border city of Ceuta, which has resulted in the deaths of dozens of migrants and the deportation of thousands.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the EU welcomed the cooperation between Spain and Morocco to swiftly repatriate migrants who entered Ceuta illegally. The Union emphasized that recent developments demonstrate the need for member states to react jointly and cohesively to this situation.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez accused some European governments of responding to the crisis with bias, spreading fake news, ignorance, or political motivations. He described their approach as selfish, divisive, and illegal.<\/p>\n
S\u00e1nchez, in a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission; Ant\u00f3nio Costa, President of the European Council; and Miche\u00e1l Martin, Prime Minister of Ireland and current holder of the EU Council presidency, has called for an emergency meeting of member states’ ministers to coordinate a unified response.<\/p>\n
According to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior, at least 67 people have died attempting to reach Spanish territory, and nearly 70,000 migrants who entered Ceuta from Morocco have so far been returned.
