Following the deaths of 19 Afghan citizens during trafficking routes to Iran in the plains of Nimroz province, Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, has called for a thorough investigation into the factors compelling people to embark on “desperate and dangerous” journeys.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, July 31, Bennett expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on his X (formerly Twitter) page, describing the incident as horrific and shocking. Highlighting the issue of illegal migration, he emphasized the need to address the root causes of this crisis.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the International Organization for Migration also extended condolences to the families and relatives of the victims, stating that every life lost on migration routes is a deep and painful tragedy.<\/p>\n
Poverty, unemployment, and lack of adequate livelihood opportunities are cited as the main reasons driving many citizens toward risky migration paths \u2014 a trend that claims numerous victims annually along difficult and trafficked routes.
