Following an unprecedented influx of tens of thousands of migrants into Ceuta, Spain’s territory in North Africa, a total of 48,300 individuals have been returned or have voluntarily gone back to Morocco by the end of Friday. This event was accompanied by the discovery of 57 bodies, highlighting the scale of a humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
According to the Associated Press, citing the Spanish Interior Ministry, the majority of these migrants decided to return after facing uncertain conditions in Ceuta, with hundreds more currently in the process of returning.<\/p>\n
Juan Jes\u00fas Vivas, head of Ceuta’s local government, stated that by Friday approximately 60,000 migrants had entered the area via land and sea routes; a figure he said amounts to 70 percent of the total population of the city. He described the situation as “unbearable.”<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that many migrants entered Ceuta by crossing the sea or scaling border fences, actions that have resulted in significant casualties. By Saturday morning, 57 bodies of people attempting to enter the territory were recovered from land and sea.<\/p>\n
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez called the event “an attack on Spain’s territorial integrity and sovereignty,” noting that his government has deployed military forces in Ceuta to control the situation.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, civil organizations have reported chaotic migrant conditions. Rashid Sebihi, head of a civil entity in Ceuta, said the area has faced “chaos” and a “serious humanitarian crisis” over the past three days. According to him, thousands, including unaccompanied children, have spent nights in parks and sidewalks, while many others have been wandering in extreme heat without shelter or access to basic services.<\/p>\n
Some European critics, including those from Italy, have pointed to recent changes in Spain\u2019s legal approach as possible factors behind this migration surge. Spain’s Supreme Court recently ruled that migrants arriving by sea to Ceuta and Melilla should not be immediately expelled before their identity is confirmed and asylum claims are reviewed. Nevertheless, the Spanish government has denied any link between this ruling and the recent crisis.<\/p>\n
