The accident occurred on Friday when the bus, traveling from Setif towards the capital, Algiers, veered off the road near the El Karma area, approximately 50 kilometers from Algiers, and fell into a deep valley.

According to reports, rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, and the injured were transported by ambulances to nearby hospitals. Mohamed Sedik Ait Moussaoudane, Algeria’s Minister of Health, warned that the death toll may rise.

The Ennahar network reported that Algerian Prime Minister Saifi Gharib visited some of the injured at the Boumerdes University Hospital.

In response to the accident, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared three days of national mourning. In a statement released on social media by his office, he called traffic offenders “road criminals and terrorists,” emphasizing that once investigations are completed, the judiciary will take serious action against those responsible.

The Algerian Civil Protection Department stated that the bus veered off the road for unknown reasons. According to the country’s road safety authorities, human factors, especially speeding, are among the main causes of traffic accidents in Algeria.

Official statistics show that last year, 3,838 people died in traffic accidents in Algeria, and more than 37,000 others were injured. Reports indicate that the recent accident was the deadliest road crash in the country in recent years; in August last year, a similar passenger bus crash into a valley near Algiers resulted in 18 deaths and 21 injuries.

A bus crash near Algiers kills 27 and prompts three days of mourning in Algeria.
