The World Bank’s latest report reveals that although Afghanistan’s economy continued to grow in June 2026, this growth has not kept pace with the rapid population increase. As a result, per capita income has decreased by 5.6%, exacerbating pressures on household livelihoods.<\/p>\n
The report notes that sustained domestic demand, relative price stability, and increased domestic revenues have contributed to continued economic growth. However, this progress remains insufficient to significantly improve citizens’ living standards. The return of millions of Afghan migrants has also contributed to population growth and heightened economic pressures.<\/p>\n
The World Bank further reports a decline in the general inflation rate from 8% in May to 7.6% in June, attributing this to falling food prices concurrent with the start of the agricultural harvest season and ongoing imports. However, core inflation rose to 8.3%, reflecting increased housing and healthcare costs.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the Afghan afghani slightly weakened against the US dollar in June, with one dollar reaching 64.4 afghanis, although the national currency remains stronger compared to the same period last year. The inflation rate differential between Afghanistan and some neighboring countries has, according to the World Bank, enhanced the competitiveness of Afghanistan\u2019s export goods.<\/p>\n
In terms of trade, the continued closure of major crossings along the Durand Line with Pakistan and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are cited as obstacles to regional trade. Despite increased use of Central Asian transit routes by traders, Afghanistan\u2019s trade deficit in June increased by 11% compared to the previous month and by 19% compared to last year, reaching $984.3 million.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan’s exports in June amounted to $77.7 million, down 2% from May but up 19% year-on-year. Textile exports grew by 304%, while food exports declined and coal exports remained low. India accounted for 33.6% of Afghan exports, making it the largest export market.<\/p>\n
Conversely, imports rose to $1.06 billion amid growing demand and expanded use of Central Asian routes, marking a 10% increase from the previous month and a 19% rise compared to last year. Central Asian routes accounted for 48% of imports, while Iran remained the largest supplier, providing 31% of goods to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Domestic revenues in June reached 17.3 billion afghanis.
