Local authorities in Pakistan’s Balochistan province have reported that a coal mine explosion in the Suranj area near the city of Quetta has claimed the lives of 34 workers, with two others missing. Shoaib Noshirwani, Balochistan’s Mining Minister, stated that 36 workers were inside the mine at the time of the incident, which took place on Thursday, July 30th, confirming the deaths of 34 so far. Muhammad Fahad, an official from Balochistan’s Crisis Management Department, said that search and rescue operations for the two missing miners are ongoing. According to officials, the explosion occurred more than 1.2 kilometers underground. Muhammad Atif, Balochistan’s Senior Mines Inspector, attributed the cause of the incident to a severe methane gas explosion, noting that two nearby tunnels were destroyed and collapsed as a result. Coal mines in Balochistan, especially around Quetta, have previously witnessed fatal accidents.
