The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has stated that the rising number of returnees to Afghanistan amid limited livelihood opportunities and basic services significantly increases the risk of human trafficking and exploitation.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, July 29, coinciding with the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the agency said that the current volume of returns to Afghanistan exceeds what can be effectively managed without extensive international support.<\/p>\n
Mi-hyang Park, head of the IOM mission in Afghanistan, emphasized that many returnees arrive in the country with few resources and face serious challenges accessing employment, shelter, and essential services.<\/p>\n
She warned that without sustainable living conditions within the country, some individuals may resort to dangerous and illegal journeys\u2014routes that expose them to human trafficking, migrant smuggling, and various forms of exploitation.<\/p>\n
The IOM added that supporting returnees and host communities is not only a humanitarian necessity but can also help promote stability and reduce vulnerability in Afghanistan.
