Shipping data indicates that commercial vessel traffic through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has reached its lowest level in recent months, following recent attacks by Yemen’s Ansar Allah on Saudi Arabia’s oil facilities.<\/p>\n
According to information released by the Kepler Institute, only 11 cargo ships passed through this strategic passage on Sunday. Among them were seven oil tankers, three of which entered the Red Sea. Two very large crude carriers (VLCCs) were en route to the Saudi port of Yanbu to load oil, and one other vessel reportedly had ties to Russia.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, four ships also exited the Red Sea that day, including the giant oil tanker “New Explorer” flying the Hong Kong flag, which was carrying about two million barrels of crude oil from Saudi Arabia and the UAE destined for Ningbo port in China. Additionally, one tanker carrying one million barrels of Russian crude oil to China and another tanker with about 750,000 barrels of Saudi oil to Pakistan passed through this route.<\/p>\n
The reduction in maritime traffic has disrupted the energy supply chain, pushing physical crude oil cargo prices in the Middle East, Europe, and Africa to their highest levels in two months last week.<\/p>\n
Yahya Saree, spokesperson for Yemen’s armed forces, stated that Ansar Allah targeted facilities linked to Saudi state-owned Aramco in the cities of Jazan and Yanbu on Saturday, an action analysts say has directly impacted the security of energy routes in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n
Simultaneously, Kepler data shows that ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz also remained low by the end of last week. On Sunday, seven ships, including three oil product tankers associated with Iran, passed through the strait, while only three vessels with transponders off passed through on Saturday.<\/p>\n
