Mohammad Shahabuddin, the President of Bangladesh, resigned from his position amid escalating political tensions fueled by the potential return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. <\/p>\n
Officials from the presidency office announced that Shahabuddin signed his resignation letter on Friday afternoon, citing health issues as the reason for stepping down. According to the BBC, the letter was handed over to Hazratullah Ahmed, the Speaker of the Parliament.<\/p>\n
The Speaker, who was on a medical trip to Thailand, cut his trip short and will assume presidential duties until a new president is elected. Under Bangladesh’s constitution, Parliament is required to elect a new president within 90 days.<\/p>\n
Shahabuddin’s resignation came just days after Sheikh Hasina told Reuters that despite facing legal proceedings, she plans to return to Bangladesh. Hasina is under investigation for her government’s handling of the widespread protests in 2024, which ultimately led to her removal from power.<\/p>\n
Sources told BBC Bangla that leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), currently in power, pressured Shahabuddin to resign. He was one of the few officials close to Hasina\u2019s administration who remained in his position after the change in government.<\/p>\n
Following Hasina’s removal amid the nationwide uprising in July, significant changes took place within state institutions, with numerous senior officials, including in the bureaucracy and police, being dismissed.<\/p>\n
The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal previously found Hasina guilty of authorizing the use of deadly force against protesters and sentenced her to death in absentia. The United Nations Office of Human Rights estimated that at least 1,400 people lost their lives during the unrest that year.<\/p>\n
After Hasina left the country, political activities of her Awami League party were banned, and several party leaders were arrested.
