Local sources in Badakhshan have reported that the request by Mohammad Yaqoob Mujahed, the Taliban’s acting Defense Minister, for young Ismailis to join the administration’s military forces has been met with opposition from the elders and residents of Ashkasham district. According to these sources, this request was made during his visit to the province but did not receive support from the local community.<\/p>\n
Reports indicate that after inspecting several areas in Badakhshan, Mullah Yaqoob arrived at the border district of Ashkasham and called on the Ismaili residents of Ashkasham, Zibak, Kuran wa Munjan, Jurm, and Yamgan districts to join the Taliban’s military ranks. However, the local elders rejected this proposal and expressed their concerns.<\/p>\n
This visit comes amid prior reports of the Taliban administration’s efforts to win the support of the Ismaili community and also exert religious pressures on them. Some local analysts believe that such an approach could deepen social and sectarian divisions in Badakhshan.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the Taliban’s Defense Minister visited the 219th military brigade in Baharak district. These movements occur as Badakhshan has recently witnessed increased intra-Taliban tensions, disputes with some local commanders, and reports of opposition front activities.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, sources have reported the disarmament of Mullah Shamsullah Jarmi, a local Taliban commander in Faizabad city. It has also been reported that fresh forces have been deployed to parts of Badakhshan, increasing the Taliban’s military presence in some areas.<\/p>\n
According to informed sources, border security concerns, the situation of Badakhshan’s mines, and conflicts with some local figures, including Jumma Khan Fateh, are among the main reasons for the extensive presence of senior Taliban officials in the province.
