These earthquakes, which have devastated large areas, are considered among the deadliest natural disasters in Venezuela’s recent history.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), on the evening of Wednesday, June 24, the first earthquake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck approximately 160 kilometers west of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. Less than a minute later, a stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 shook the same area. The intensity of these tremors caused widespread destruction to buildings and infrastructure.

The USGS had predicted that the number of casualties could exceed 10,000; if realized, this would make the event one of the deadliest earthquakes in Latin America in the past century.

In response to this disaster, Venezuelan officials have announced the creation of a $200 million reconstruction fund in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Earlier, it was also reported that the IMF and the World Bank would provide financial and credit assistance for rebuilding the affected areas.

Concurrently, the European Union has pledged five million euros in emergency aid. EU Foreign Policy Chief, Josep Borrell, stated that the Copernicus satellite system has been activated to assess the extent of the damage and to coordinate assistance efforts in the areas in need.

Venezuela’s earthquake death toll hits 3,342 with ongoing rescue efforts; international aid includes a $200M fund, IMF support, and EU emergency assistance.

[17,6

post-16799","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-international
["GET
