Alexander de Croo, Deputy Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), announced during his visit to Afghanistan that three-quarters of the country\u2019s population are unable to meet their basic living needs. He emphasized that crises in Afghanistan rarely occur in isolation. While emergency aid saves lives, sustainable solutions to restore hope and a future for the people require investment in development.<\/p>\n
Mr. de Croo made these remarks after visiting the Sotan village in the Dara Noor district of Nangarhar province. According to him, the purpose of this trip was to directly observe the UNDP\u2019s efforts in assisting local communities to overcome consecutive crises.<\/p>\n
He said the residents of this village were deeply concerned about the complete destruction of their area following last year\u2019s earthquakes that shook parts of eastern Afghanistan. However, support in rebuilding homes, restoring essential services, and strengthening livelihood resources helped the village return to a normal cycle of life.<\/p>\n
The UNDP head also reported the implementation of a flood protection and irrigation project in Sotan, adding that this initiative has contributed to reducing the risk of natural disasters, protecting agricultural lands, and creating income-generating opportunities for the residents. He noted that both women and men in the village actively participated in carrying out this project.<\/p>\n
De Croo pointed out that climate change is a tangible reality in Afghanistan, with people experiencing its consequences directly. In recent years, Afghanistan has faced droughts, floods, and devastating earthquakes.<\/p>\n
The 6.0 and 5.0 magnitude earthquakes in the month of Sunbula last year shook Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, causing dozens of deaths and widespread destruction of homes.
