Berham Salih, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and Alexander De Croo, the head of the UN Development Programme, arrived in Kabul today, Sunday, to closely examine the situation of refugees and humanitarian challenges in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriations announced that these two UN officials were welcomed at Kabul International Airport by Abdulrahman Rashid, the ministry’s professional deputy. According to the ministry, the purpose of this visit is to engage in discussions with officials and conduct field assessments of the returnees’ conditions.<\/p>\n
In his meeting with the delegation, Abdulrahman Rashid stated that the presence of international officials on the ground and direct dialogue with the people provides a clearer and more accurate picture than written reports. He added that millions of Afghans have lived outside the country for years but have maintained their ties with their homeland, and addressing their problems is essential to preserving human dignity and improving their living conditions.<\/p>\n
Berham Salih described the aim of his visit as a close examination of the people’s problems and seeking ways to address them. He said that since 2023, about six million Afghans have returned to the country; a figure he characterized as unprecedented globally. He emphasized the continued commitment of the United Nations to support the people of Afghanistan and to sustain humanitarian aid.<\/p>\n
Alexander De Croo also stated that the United Nations maintains its active presence in Afghanistan and continues cooperation in development, health, and humanitarian assistance sectors. He further announced efforts to create more job opportunities for Afghan citizens.<\/p>\n
