Data compiled from reports by the Taliban administration’s High Commission for Migrants indicates that Pakistan expelled 66,712 Afghan migrants between May 29 and July 2 of this year. These individuals entered Pakistan through the Torkham crossing in Nangarhar, Spin Boldak in Kandahar, and Bahramcha in Helmand, with a large portion forcibly returned.<\/p>\n
According to the same data, the commission has not published information for six days of the past week and three days from the previous week, raising questions about the transparency of the Taliban administration\u2019s communication regarding migrant conditions.<\/p>\n
While Pakistani media have reported that the expulsion of undocumented Afghan migrants has intensified, with nearly 6,000 people being sent back to Afghanistan daily, the Taliban’s High Commission stated that on Friday, June 30, 1,840 individuals were returned \u2014 a figure significantly lower than Pakistani reports.<\/p>\n
Pakistani media also quoted officials saying that daily visits to Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for registration have risen from about 600\u2013700 people to 1,200\u20131,300, indicating increasing pressure on undocumented migrants.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a message on June 20 marking World Refugee Day, said that from September 2023 to June 2026, at least 2.4 million migrants have been returned to Afghanistan. He emphasized that this process has been “gradual, orderly, and respectful of human dignity,” a claim that is challenged by reports from international organizations highlighting detentions and human rights abuses against migrants.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, data also shows that Iran has returned 3,507 people to Afghanistan during the same period.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in a report published on June 27, warned that the return of about 2.3 million migrants within a year, along with economic stagnation, climate shocks, and natural disaster consequences, has placed unprecedented strain on Afghanistan\u2019s recovery process.<\/p>\n
The report, titled “From Return to Recovery for Afghan Returnees and Host Communities,” added that a large number of returnees have been displaced in the poor eastern and northern regions, increasing competition for jobs, housing, water, and essential services, severely limiting the capacity of host communities.<\/p>\n
The UNDP also called for increased investment in returnee settlement areas and the lifting of restrictions imposed by the Taliban on women\u2019s work and mobility\u2014restrictions considered by international bodies to hinder half the country\u2019s population from participating in economic and social life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
