The General Directorate of Disaster Preparedness has announced that the international organization JICA has emphasized the continuation and expansion of its support for mine clearance programs in Afghanistan. This was highlighted during a joint meeting between officials of the directorate and JICA’s special representative.<\/p>\n
According to the directorate’s newsletter, the meeting discussed the current status of mine-contaminated areas, existing needs, ongoing projects, and future plans. Both parties also talked about mobilizing more financial and technical assistance and strengthening joint coordination efforts.<\/p>\n
Qari Nooruddin Rustamkhil, head of mine clearance coordination and cohesion at the Disaster Preparedness Directorate, stressed in the meeting the need to increase financial and technical support for the effective implementation of mine clearance projects, considering it essential to reducing dangers faced by residents of contaminated areas.<\/p>\n
In response, Tosca Suta, the special representative of the international organization JICA, welcomed the proposals made and pledged to follow up the matter through relevant channels and facilitate necessary coordination for continued cooperation.<\/p>\n
The meeting also involved discussions on using new technologies in mine clearance, JICA\u2019s proposed programs, and expanding cooperation through the United Nations Development Programme. Both sides agreed to hold further meetings to develop cooperation and advance mine clearance initiatives.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan remains one of the countries severely affected by landmines and unexploded ordnance due to decades of conflict.
