Asif Durrani, Pakistan’s former special representative for Afghanistan, emphasized that despite the withdrawal of US and NATO forces in 2021, the United Nations and the Security Council’s responsibility to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a haven for terrorist groups has not ended. He called for global transparency regarding the recognition of the Taliban administration.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, June 28, Durrani wrote on X that the existing Security Council resolutions remain valid and obligate the international community to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for terrorist organizations. According to him, the departure of foreign forces does not absolve the international community of this responsibility.<\/p>\n
He urged UN sanctions committees to provide objective, evidence-based assessments of the situation concerning terrorist groups in Afghanistan and to avoid downplaying the presence and activities of these groups. These remarks come as international organizations’ reports have repeatedly warned in recent years about the security threats posed by extremist networks operating in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
The former Pakistani representative also asserted that the Taliban administration must be held accountable to its commitments to prevent sheltering terrorist groups and to regulate relations with neighboring countries based on international norms. He stressed that accountability and transparency are fundamental conditions for reducing regional and global concerns.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Durrani called on the international community to clearly state its stance on recognizing the Taliban administration.
