The statistics reveal that approximately 80 percent of the victims are children.

On Tuesday, the UN humanitarian agency released a video emphasizing that the people of Afghanistan must be able to live in a safe environment free from the fear of hidden explosive materials. The agency warned that the threat from leftover munitions from years of conflict remains present in many areas of the country.

OCHA also noted that mine clearance and ordnance disposal programs, which play a direct role in saving lives, have faced a significant reduction in activity in recent months due to severe cuts in international funding. According to the agency, limiting these programs could increase risks for civilians, especially children.

The United Nations stressed the necessity of continued financial support for these efforts, affirming the Afghan people’s right to live in a secure environment free from explosive threats. Based on the organization’s data, about 3.3 million people live near areas contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance.

Explosions from ordnance left by decades of war remain a major cause of civilian casualties in the country. Under these circumstances, the Taliban administration is expected to coordinate with international organizations to facilitate access and protection for mine clearance programs and to seriously fulfill their responsibility in safeguarding civilian lives.

UN reports nearly 50 monthly casualties in Afghanistan due to unexploded ordnance, with 80% victims being children.
