Richard Lindsay, the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, has voiced deep concern over the ongoing violence in Afghanistan and Pakistan, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and uphold international humanitarian law. He stated that his country condemns all forms of terrorism and called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region.<\/p>\n
On Monday, 29 June, Lindsay posted a message on X, highlighting that the continued loss of lives on both sides of the border is troubling and that the global community must focus on preventing the escalation of conflicts.<\/p>\n
This reaction follows recent attacks by Pakistan on parts of the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar. Pakistani officials announced that they targeted positions belonging to Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and the group Jamaat-ul-Ahrar.<\/p>\n
In response, the Taliban administration stated that these attacks have struck civilian homes, resulting in 36 fatalities and 163 injuries. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) confirmed the deaths of 28 civilians and injuries to 49 others, noting that women and children are among the victims.<\/p>\n
The recent assaults come amid escalating tensions between the Taliban administration and Pakistan. Since fresh clashes began between the two sides in February this year, areas in eastern Afghanistan have frequently been targeted by aerial and rocket strikes, leading to increased civilian casualties and widespread concerns over the security of residents in these regions.<\/p>\n
