Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy for Legal and International Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that technical working group meetings with the United States under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding are not scheduled for this week and reports of such talks taking place in Doha are not confirmed.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, June 28, responding to journalists, he said that although consultations with Qatar, including on following up on commitments, continue as usual, reports by some media outlets about technical negotiations occurring in Doha are incorrect. According to him, the timing and location of the first round of technical talks after a final agreement between the parties will be determined.<\/p>\n
These remarks come as Reuters had reported that technical discussions covering all articles of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding were to be held on Tuesday in Doha. Iranian officials have denied this report.<\/p>\n
Last week, following a meeting in Switzerland, officials from both countries announced an agreement on arrangements for future negotiations. Under this understanding, four working groups are to be established in the areas of sanctions relief, nuclear issues, reconstruction and economic development, as well as monitoring and implementation.<\/p>\n
It was also decided to create a joint contact point for the safe passage of commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz and a conflict prevention unit in Lebanon among the signatory countries of the memorandum, with participation from Pakistan and Qatar. Oversight of these mechanisms will be assigned to technical delegations who will report their findings to a high-level committee.<\/p>\n
Recent meetings took place after the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding was signed on June 18, with delegations from Iran, the United States, Pakistan, and Qatar present in Switzerland.
