The Taliban’s Deputy Minister for Counter-Narcotics at the Ministry of Interior met with the head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to request a ‘fair and realistic’ portrayal of Afghanistan’s achievements in drug control in the UN’s forthcoming global report.<\/p>\n
According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Munir emphasized during his meeting with Pollock Ok Siri that the efforts made in prevention and combating drugs should be honestly and accurately reflected in the report. The two sides also exchanged views on the content of the upcoming UN global report.<\/p>\n
The head of the UNODC office said the purpose of the meeting was to discuss this very report and added that the Taliban’s achievements, especially in drug control, would be included in the report in accordance with the facts.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Interior also quoted Munir as saying that security forces in several provinces have had ‘remarkable successes’ in preventing drug trafficking, particularly along the country’s major highways. However, independent details regarding the extent of these achievements and their impact on reducing trafficking have not been separately released.<\/p>\n
The Deputy Minister for Counter-Narcotics further requested practical cooperation and special attention from the United Nations in providing alternative livelihoods for farmers who previously engaged in poppy cultivation and other prohibited crops. Experts have previously emphasized that sustainable drug control is not possible without creating alternative livelihood opportunities for farmers and requires transparent, long-term, and accountable programs.
