Local sources in Qarabagh district of Kabul report that on Ashura day, Taliban’s Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice officers raided the Khatam al-Anbiya Mosque in Qala-e-Shahi, halted the mourning ceremony, and forcibly expelled the mourners. According to these sources, the mosque gates were closed after ejecting the participants, and local residents were not allowed to continue the ritual.<\/p>\n
A source told Etilaat Roz newspaper on Sunday, 7 Saratan, that Taliban officers not only prevented the ceremony but also declared the Shia practice of consuming ritual offerings “haram” (forbidden). The source stated that these officers used offensive language, referred to Shia followers as “polytheists,” and stopped the residents from taking and eating the offerings.<\/p>\n
According to this source, a number of Shia community members visited the Taliban district office in Qarabagh to follow up on the issue, but reportedly, local officials did not address the complaint, and no action was taken in response to the incident.<\/p>\n
Local sources note that only residents of one village in Qarabagh district adhere to the Shia faith, and every year, Ashura ceremonies are held there with the participation of Sunni followers as well. They added that Sunnis also attended this year’s ceremonies, highlighting the religious coexistence in the area.<\/p>\n
However, since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan, restrictions on Muharram mourning ceremonies have increased. This year\u2019s Muharram restrictions persisted, and under the orders of Abdul Hakim Sharie, the Taliban Justice Minister, several Shia elders were arrested.
