Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission in Geneva has announced that, with the support of 41 countries, a joint statement has been presented to the United Nations Human Rights Council officially condemning the Taliban administration’s policies against women and girls in Afghanistan. The statement describes these policies as “systematic oppression and discrimination” and a clear violation of international law principles.<\/p>\n
Naser Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan’s ambassador to Switzerland, said on Friday, June 25, that the document characterizes the Taliban’s approach towards women and girls as an institutionalized, multifaceted program that is systematically and deliberately implemented. According to him, this situation not only restricts the fundamental rights of women but also deprives them of the most basic human rights.<\/p>\n
The statement notes that, for the fifth consecutive year, girls have been denied access to education, and women have been barred from work, healthcare services, participating in public life, engaging in civil activities, and involvement in humanitarian efforts. These widespread restrictions have made Afghanistan the only country in the world that systematically prohibits secondary and higher education for girls.<\/p>\n
The statement also mentions arbitrary arrests, harassment by religious enforcers, censorship, and violence as tools of repression, emphasizing that women have suffered the most from these actions. Such conduct is regarded as contradictory to Afghanistan’s international commitments.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan’s Permanent Mission has called on the international community to support and strengthen the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, as well as the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Afghanistan (IIM-A).
