The European Union has announced a fresh allocation of \u20ac20 million to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to expand services for internally displaced persons and returnees in Afghanistan. This aid comes as Afghanistan continues to face one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with a rising wave of returning migrants increasing pressures on local communities.<\/p>\n
In an EU statement released on Tuesday, June 22, it was noted that the growing number of returnees has further complicated the fragile humanitarian situation. Many of the returnees, after years of migration, are now settling in areas with limited facilities and few job opportunities.<\/p>\n
The International Organization for Migration has stated that this funding will be used to strengthen family livelihoods, support small businesses, and improve access to essential services in regions experiencing high rates of return. The program aims to reduce economic vulnerability and assist the reintegration of returnees into host communities.<\/p>\n
According to released information, part of this aid will be dedicated to protection services, health support, psychological counseling, and reconstruction programs in high-return areas. Relief agencies emphasize that humanitarian needs remain extensive in many provinces.<\/p>\n
IOM statistics show that over 2.8 million undocumented migrants returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan in 2025 alone.
