The organization emphasized that Afghanistan is not a safe country for repatriation and that such decisions could put returnees’ lives at serious risk.

On Tuesday, June 22, Amnesty International issued a statement warning that returning migrants to Afghanistan disregards the documented dangers they face. According to Amnesty, risks such as persecution, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, torture, retaliatory actions, and other inhumane treatment are primary reasons why citizens fled the country.

Ivo Geddi, the director of Amnesty International’s European institutions office, said any EU involvement in deporting individuals to Afghanistan is “reckless, dangerous, and contrary to the EU’s legal obligations.” He added that the principle of non-refoulement—prohibiting the return to places where lives are at risk—is a fundamental norm of international law and must not be ignored.

Amnesty also highlighted that the Taliban’s institutionalized repressive regime affects all aspects of daily life. The organization pointed to severe restrictions on the rights of women and girls, arbitrary detentions, torture, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial executions as ongoing widespread human rights violations.

Referring to the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Amnesty noted that severe food insecurity and the urgent need for humanitarian aid for millions of people have exacerbated the situation. The organization stressed that the EU is aware of the deteriorating conditions, has repeatedly condemned human rights violations by the Taliban administration, and has supported the establishment of independent investigative mechanisms regarding Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the European Commission confirmed it has sent an invitation to a technical delegation from the Taliban administration for talks concerning migrant deportations. Reuters reported that the delegation will soon travel to Brussels, with the Belgian government issuing one-day visas for its members.

The invitation to the Taliban delegation has sparked widespread reactions. Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, described the move as an insult to Afghan women and warned of its potential consequences.

Amnesty International urges the EU to stop deporting Afghan migrants, warning that Afghanistan is unsafe and highlighting ongoing human rights abuses under the Taliban.

[17,6,16

post-15872","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-international","category-secondary-headline
["GET
