Malala Yousafzai, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has strongly criticized the European Union’s decision to invite a Taliban delegation to Brussels, stating that Europe should not legitimize a group responsible for one of the world’s most severe human rights crises. The delegation is scheduled to visit Brussels today, Tuesday, June 23, at the invitation of the European Commission.<\/p>\n
The official purpose of the visit is to discuss the deportation of Afghan asylum seekers. However, the invitation has sparked widespread negative reactions among human rights activists and women’s rights organizations.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Yousafzai said she was “deeply saddened and distressed” by the decision. She emphasized that the Taliban administration has deprived girls of secondary education and subjected them to severe social restrictions, including forced marriages.<\/p>\n
She also highlighted the detention of women and girls in Herat over their clothing and added that women who dare to protest or dissent face arrest, beatings, and even harsh punishments. Yousafzai described the Taliban’s actions as a form of “gender apartheid,” asserting that women and girls have effectively been excluded from public life.<\/p>\n
