Volker T\u00fcrk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has expressed concern over the European Union’s new regulation aimed at returning ‘illegal’ migrants. He stated that the detention and expulsion of vulnerable individuals, especially children, could pose a serious risk of human rights violations.<\/p>\n
The UN Human Rights Council Office issued a statement on Saturday, June 20, emphasizing that the adoption of this regulation establishes the legal framework necessary for the expulsion of migrants and asylum seekers from the EU’s 27 member states. According to the agency, the expansion of detention powers prior to expulsion has raised significant concerns regarding compliance with international human rights obligations.<\/p>\n
This regulation was approved on June 17 and allows member states to detain migrants for longer periods before deportation. Additionally, under this law, the establishment of so-called ‘return centers’ in third countries has been authorized \u2013 a move critics argue could shift the legal responsibilities of European governments beyond their borders.<\/p>\n
The European Parliament passed the regulation with 418 votes in favor, 218 against, and 30 abstentions. However, for the law to take effect, it must receive formal approval from the Council of the European Union and then be published in the EU’s Official Journal.<\/p>\n
Volker T\u00fcrk emphasized that EU member states cannot delegate their human rights responsibilities to other countries. He described the detention and expulsion of vulnerable individuals as a ‘highly sensitive’ matter and underscored that such processes must be conducted in full compliance with human rights principles.<\/p>\n
The UN High Commissioner also stressed the importance of protecting the right to private and family life, preserving family unity, and ensuring the best interests of children at all stages of migrant returns.
