Khawaja Asif, Pakistan’s Defence Minister, stated that despite several rounds of talks between Islamabad officials and the Taliban administration, no written guarantees have yet been received to prevent the use of Afghan soil for attacks against Pakistan. According to Asif, over the past years, Pakistan’s political, military, and intelligence officials have repeatedly negotiated with Taliban representatives, but these efforts have not yielded practical and measurable results. He rejected criticisms suggesting Pakistan has been inactive in engaging with the Taliban, noting he personally led high-level delegations to Afghanistan twice and met Taliban officials in meetings held in Turkey and Qatar.<\/p>\n
The Defence Minister added that during these negotiations, the Taliban had agreed to several proposals but refrained from providing written commitments. Islamabad seeks official guarantees that armed individuals and groups based in Afghan territory will not be allowed to operate against Pakistan.<\/p>\n
Asif also claimed that in one meeting, the Taliban requested $10 billion in financial aid from Pakistan. He said Pakistan expressed readiness to cooperate but conditioned this collaboration on receiving security guarantees.<\/p>\n
The Defence Minister emphasized that many attacks in Pakistan\u2019s Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces originate from \u201cTaliban-controlled Afghanistan,\u201d and Pakistan has explored all diplomatic channels to secure cooperation from the Taliban administration. Meanwhile, the Taliban have consistently claimed they do not permit the use of Afghan soil against other countries, but the lack of clear and enforceable guarantees remains a key source of tension between the two sides.<\/p>\n
He concluded by declaring Pakistan supports continued dialogue but expects any future process to produce practical outcomes and clear commitments.
