The United Nations Security Council has extended the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) for another year by adopting Resolution 2822, a move welcomed by China’s representative. Fu Cong stated at the Security Council meeting that UNAMA must continue to act as a bridge between Afghanistan and the international community and maintain its engagement with the Taliban administration.<\/p>\n
The Chinese envoy emphasized that extending this mission could help manage the crisis in Afghanistan, particularly addressing the situation of thousands of returning Afghan migrants. He added that UNAMA should support human rights, education, employment, justice, and the Afghan people while focusing on its key responsibilities.<\/p>\n
In part of his remarks, Fu Cong urged the Taliban administration to consider the legitimate demands of the people, especially regarding women’s rights, and to present an open and inclusive governance model. This comes as the Taliban’s widespread restrictions on women’s education and work continue to face serious domestic and international criticism and are seen as major obstacles to Afghanistan’s engagement with the world.<\/p>\n
He also called for lifting restrictions on women’s work in UN institutions and said that UNAMA should encourage the Taliban to establish an inclusive government, adhere to international commitments, and integrate into the global community. The Chinese representative expressed support for the Doha process and added that the new resolution emphasizes combating terrorism and strengthening regional cooperation.<\/p>\n
According to the resolution, a report on UNAMA’s performance is expected in March next year, and oversight of the mission will continue.
