Shahbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, defended the fencing and enhancement of security infrastructure along the border with Afghanistan during a session of the country’s National Assembly on Saturday, calling it part of the national security strategy. He stated that the expenses incurred to secure the border were aimed at protecting the lives of Pakistani citizens and were essential to curb security threats.<\/p>\n
According to him, billions of rupees have been spent on building fences, installing cameras, and other surveillance equipment along the nearly two-thousand-kilometer-long border. Sharif emphasized that these measures are designed to reduce illegal crossings and prevent threats.<\/p>\n
The Pakistani Prime Minister added that even if these actions save the life of a single citizen, especially a child, the costs are justified. He also acknowledged that differing opinions on the matter are respectable, but the responsibility for ensuring security lies with the government.<\/p>\n
These remarks came in response to statements made by opposition leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, who said during the National Assembly meeting that the Durand Line creates a divide among Pashtuns on both sides of the border and has social and humanitarian consequences.<\/p>\n
