Reports indicate that the Donald Trump administration is exploring a plan to transfer a number of refugees, including Afghan nationals, to African countries, raising new concerns about the fate of former US military collaborators in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Reuters has reported that, as part of a potential agreement with the Central African Republic, the first flight to transfer around 20 refugees is being planned. This group includes not only Afghans but also refugees from Syria and Iran. At the same time, reports have surfaced of talks between Washington and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to accept some of these individuals.<\/p>\n
The plan has drawn criticism from US lawmakers. More than 80 Democrats and Republicans in Congress signed a letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urging the prevention of transferring Afghan nationals from Qatar to third countries.<\/p>\n
Many of these individuals, including translators, contractors, and security personnel who worked with the US military, applied for visas and relocation to the United States following the withdrawal of US forces in 2021. Some were relocated to third countries, including Qatar, but their case reviews have faced long delays and remain in uncertain status.<\/p>\n
Jason Crow, a Democratic representative from Colorado and former US Army officer, emphasized that Washington must uphold its commitments to those who risked their lives to protect American troops. Critics argue that transferring these individuals to African countries without clear guarantees of eventual resettlement in the US could jeopardize their safety and future.<\/p>\n
While thousands of Afghan citizens have faced security threats following the fall of the previous government and the return of the Taliban administration, the fate of former US collaborators remains an unresolved issue.
