The United Nations has announced that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide reached 117.8 million by the end of 2025, marking a decrease of approximately 5.4 million compared to the previous year. This represents the first annual reduction in displacement in more than ten years, although the organization emphasizes that the overall level of displacement remains very high and concerning.<\/p>\n
According to the annual report by the UN Refugee Agency, the primary driver of this decline was the widespread return of refugees and internally displaced persons to their main areas of residence. In total, 14.7 million people returned to their homes in 2025, including 4.4 million refugees who returned to their countries after residing abroad.<\/p>\n
The agency stated that the number of refugee returns last year was the second highest recorded in six decades. Additionally, millions of internally displaced people were able to resettle again in their primary areas of habitation.<\/p>\n
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva noted that over 90 percent of the refugees who returned in 2025 were residents of Afghanistan, Sudan, and Syria. However, he warned that a significant portion of these returns occurred while lasting security and stability in these countries had not yet been fully established.<\/p>\n
He explained that some returnees were compelled to leave host countries not due to genuine improvements in conditions, but because of economic pressures, political challenges, and residency restrictions. Regarding Afghanistan, concerns remain over human rights conditions, restrictions on women and girls, and livelihood challenges under Taliban rule\u2014issues that could seriously undermine the sustainability of these returns.<\/p>\n
While cautiously welcoming the decrease in displacement figures, the UN Refugee Agency called on the international community to undertake broader and sustained efforts to address the root causes of crises stemming from war, violence, and persecution in order to prevent prolonged displacement from recurring in the coming years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
