In response to the detention of dozens of women in Herat province by the Taliban’s Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice forces, a number of civil activists, journalists, and Iranian citizens have expressed their support for Afghan women protesters, condemning the action as a violation of fundamental citizens’ rights.<\/p>\n
These reactions emerged on Tuesday, June 9, through messages posted on social media. Iranian protesters condemned the Taliban forces’ treatment of women accused of “improper hijab” and the violent suppression of popular protests, urging the international community to pay more serious attention to the human rights situation in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
In one such message, an Iranian citizen on the social media platform X supported the protesting women and men in Herat using the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom.” Additionally, an Iranian journalist highlighted the solidarity between Iranian and Afghan women, stating their support for Afghan women just as Afghan women have previously supported Iranian women.<\/p>\n
At the same time, the Coordination Council of Afghan Political and Consular Representatives condemned in a statement the detention of women and girls and the violent suppression of peaceful protests in Herat. The council reported that several people have been killed and injured during these events.<\/p>\n
The Coordination Council called for the immediate release of detainees, an end to discrimination and violence against women, and accountability for those responsible for the repression. It also urged the United Nations, the European Union, and other international actors to prioritize the rights of Afghan women and girls in their dealings with the Taliban administration.<\/p>\n
Recent reports from Herat indicate that restrictions on women’s social presence and dress code continue in the province. These limitations, imposed since the Taliban took control of the country, have repeatedly been met with widespread domestic and international criticism.
