Mohammad Ismail Khan, a former jihadi commander, has described the widespread arrest and harassment of women in Herat by the Taliban administration as “unbearable” and warned against the continuation of this situation. On Tuesday, June 9, he issued a statement emphasizing that the increasing pressures on women in this province are intolerable and will have severe consequences.<\/p>\n
Addressing the Taliban authorities, this political figure stated that no regime has succeeded through force, repression, and humiliation of the people, a fact proven by historical experience. He called on the girls and women of Herat to stand firm against these pressures and added that this situation will not last.<\/p>\n
Ismail Khan described the behaviors taking place as “primitive, unskillful, and ignorant” and said that actions contradicting the dignity, honor, and Islamic and human rights of citizens are unjustifiable. According to him, the “arbitrary” restrictions against women and girls are a disrespect to the people of Herat.<\/p>\n
He also warned that preaching and enforcing religious laws through unprincipled methods and arbitrary approaches will only lead to religious alienation and the weakening of faith. In his view, at a time when people are grappling with economic problems, poverty, and lawlessness, focusing on the harassment of women means ignoring the fundamental priorities of society.<\/p>\n
Part of his statement read: “The dignity of our people is our red line, and silence in the face of oppression against women is a betrayal of Afghanistan\u2019s identity.” He further emphasized that the voice of the girls of Herat reflects the awakened conscience of society.<\/p>\n
