Georgette Gagnon, presenting a new report, revealed that approximately 3.8 million girls are deprived of education, and 21.9 million people will require humanitarian aid in 2026.

The UN Security Council meeting on Afghanistan was held on Monday, June 7, Kabul time, at the UN headquarters in New York, and the text of UNAMA’s acting head’s speech was also published. Gagnon stated that during her travels to various regions, especially remote areas, she heard common messages from residents about increasing economic pressures, human rights issues, and humanitarian concerns.

Referring to some “signs of stability in macroeconomic indicators,” she emphasized that this stability is fragile and seriously threatened. According to her, the large-scale return of refugees from neighboring countries is the most significant current challenge; since 2023, nearly 5.9 million people have returned to Afghanistan, increasing the population by over 10 percent. It is predicted that another 2.8 million will return this year, while the country’s economy cannot fully absorb them, and poverty levels are rising.

The acting head of UNAMA stressed that Afghanistan is still experiencing one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, with millions dependent on urgent aid to survive.

In another part of the report, Gagnon described the situation of women and girls as a “systematic and institutionalized harm” with long-term consequences for the entire society. According to the report, over 2.6 million adolescent girls are among the 3.8 million girls deprived of education, and about 250,000 additional girls drop out of secondary education each year.

She called on the Taliban administration to lift all educational and work restrictions against women and girls, including the ban on female UN staff, which she said violates the United Nations Charter. Gagnon also expressed concern over the further erosion of human rights in the country and warned about “Order No. 18 concerning the separation of spouses,” which contradicts the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and children’s rights.

This latest UNAMA report comes as ongoing restrictions on women and the absence of inclusive economic policies by the Taliban administration have heightened domestic and international concerns about Afghanistan’s social and economic future.

UNAMA reports 3.8 million Afghan girls are denied education amid economic crisis and calls for lifting restrictions on women’s rights in Afghanistan.

[17,4,16

post-14746","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-politics","category-secondary-headline
["GET
