Uzbekistan has announced that the feasibility study for the Trans-Afghan Corridor project has entered its practical phase, with technical teams commencing fieldwork. Designed to enhance transport connectivity between Central and South Asia, the preliminary results of the study are expected to be presented to the involved governments by the end of this year.<\/p>\n
Shokhrukh Gulyamov, Deputy Minister of Investment, Industry, and Trade of Uzbekistan, stated at the second Termez Dialogue on Central and South Asia connectivity that the project is one of the region’s significant and historic initiatives. He emphasized that the Trans-Afghan Corridor could play a key role in expanding economic cooperation and increasing trade among the countries in the region.<\/p>\n
Gulyamov added that the corridor will not merely be a simple transport route but could evolve into an extensive transport network within Afghanistan in the future. Uzbek officials stressed that the project is being advanced in coordination with other regional initiatives, including the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway line.<\/p>\n
The increase in trade between Central and South Asian countries has been cited as a primary reason for the need to develop transport infrastructure and establish alternative transit routes. Regional experts believe that the lack of secure and diversified routes has posed challenges to trade flows among these countries.<\/p>\n
In 2025, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan signed a tripartite agreement in Kabul to conduct a feasibility study for the Trans-Afghan railway line. This agreement was reached during the Taliban’s governance of Afghanistan and aims to connect Central Asia to Pakistani ports via rail.<\/p>\n
According to reports, work on project financing, cooperation with technical partners, and route finalization continues.
