In an interview with the news network Euractiv, published on Friday, June 5, she emphasized that engaging with the Taliban under the guise of “technical cooperation to facilitate migrant expulsions” is unjustifiable in the current circumstances.

According to Neumann, while millions of girls in Afghanistan are deprived of education due to the Taliban regime’s extensive restrictions, enabling representatives of this group to travel to Europe sends a contradictory message to public opinion. She stated, “Those who sacrifice the principles of foreign policy for expulsion agreements lose both their credibility and their security.”

The European Parliament member added that the consequences of such a decision would not be limited to Afghanistan alone. She believes that if Europe easily yields to pressure, other authoritarian regimes will draw similar conclusions, potentially undermining the European Union’s position in defending its proclaimed values.

In recent weeks, the European Commission’s announcement of plans to host a Taliban delegation in Brussels sparked widespread reactions. Two weeks ago, the Commission announced without specifying a date that these talks would be held at a technical level without the participation of senior diplomats from either side, aiming to facilitate the migrant expulsion process.

However, parts of the Afghan diaspora community in Europe have expressed concern over the presence of Taliban members in European countries. They have warned in several protest events that such engagements could complicate the security and legal status of Afghan asylum seekers.

Germany was among the first European countries to engage with the Taliban to advance the migrant expulsion process, accepting two Taliban representatives as “technical staff” at the Afghan embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Bonn. Reports have now emerged indicating that these individuals have taken control of Afghanistan’s diplomatic missions.

According to the publication NDR, the Taliban’s foreign affairs ministry has communicated to Germany through these representatives that if more diplomats are not accepted by the Taliban, it will not authorize flights carrying expelled migrants to Kabul. This issue has once again heightened concerns about the approach to dealing with the Taliban administration and its implications for migrants’ rights and the credibility of European institutions.

European Parliament member Hanna Neumann criticizes the invitation of a Taliban delegation to Brussels, warning it undermines Europe’s security and values.

[17,6,3

post-14527","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-international","category-top-news
["GET
