Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General, stated that Russia loses about 30,000 military personnel every month in the war in Ukraine, a figure he says exceeds the total casualties suffered by the Soviet Union during the decade-long war in Afghanistan. He made these remarks during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.<\/p>\n
Rutte described this level of casualties as “considerable” and said Russian forces are being sent to the front lines at high risk of being killed or wounded. He also claimed that some wounded Russian soldiers are being left on the battlefield without receiving medical aid, although this allegation has not yet been independently verified.<\/p>\n
The NATO Secretary General further added that the ongoing war has placed significant pressure on Russia’s economy, and Moscow is struggling to cover military expenses.<\/p>\n
According to official statistics, the Soviet Union suffered approximately 15,000 deaths and more than 53,000 injuries during the war in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. However, some other estimates suggest that the number of fatalities in that war was higher than the official figures.
