The two-day meeting, which began on Tuesday, June 2, at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the continuation of global support for Afghan women.

Government officials, representatives of international organizations, civil society, and women’s rights activists attended the conference. The organizers stated that the event aimed to examine the role of feminist foreign policy in defending women’s rights, promoting gender equality, supporting peace, and protecting democratic values.

Speakers referred to the ongoing systematic exclusion of women from educational, occupational, and social fields in Afghanistan, describing the situation as a clear example of “gender apartheid.” They stressed that the Taliban administration is attempting to silence women’s voices through widespread restrictions, an action that has been met with mounting global backlash.

José Manuel Albares, Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, said that a yearly meeting is held at the ministry with organizations and associations of Afghan women in exile. Addressing Afghan women, he added, “This will always be your home, and your voice will be heard from this ministry, no matter how much the Taliban try to silence it.”

Éléonore Caroit, France’s Minister Delegate for International Partnerships, also described defending women’s rights globally as a shared responsibility. She identified the situation of Afghan women and girls as one of the most prominent examples of the women’s rights crisis amid war and instability.

Fawzia Koofi, former Deputy Speaker of the Afghan House of Representatives, warned in her remarks that the appeasement policies of some countries towards the Taliban administration have facilitated increased repression. She emphasized that European countries must not legitimize policies that violate fundamental women’s rights under the pretext of deporting migrants.

In other parts of the meeting, participants discussed the consequences of humanitarian aid, the role of women in the peacebuilding process, and the future of democracy in Afghanistan. They called for sustained and targeted support for Afghan women and girls, who, following the Taliban’s return to power, face bans on education, employment restrictions, and widespread gender discrimination.

The Madrid conference condemned the Taliban’s restrictive policies, emphasizing global support for Afghan women’s rights and gender equality.

[17,4

post-14387","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-important-news","category-politics
["GET
