The United Nations General Assembly has appointed Nasir Ahmad Fayiq, the charg\u00e9 d’affaires of Afghanistan’s permanent mission to the UN, as Vice President of its 81st session. This decision was made concurrently with the election of Khalilur Rahman, the permanent representative of Bangladesh, as the new President of this session.<\/p>\n
According to results announced by the United Nations, Khalilur Rahman won the secret ballot held at the UN headquarters in New York, securing 99 votes against 91 for Andreas S. Kakouris, the candidate from Cyprus. A total of 190 votes were cast in the election, with no abstentions recorded.<\/p>\n
In response to his appointment, Nasir Ahmad Fayiq expressed Afghanistan’s pleasure at being selected as one of the Vice Presidents of this session. He hopes to work closely with the elected President and other member states to play an effective role in advancing the responsibilities and goals of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n
Alongside the selection of the President and Vice Presidents, members of the Bureau for the main committees of the General Assembly were also appointed. Khalilur Rahman succeeds Annalena Baerbock, the former German Foreign Minister, who presided over the 80th session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n
The President of the UN General Assembly oversees the sessions of this 193-member body and plays a role in organizing discussions on important international issues, although the position does not hold executive authority within the UN structure.
