Following the United Nations’ expression of concern about the increase in child marriages in Afghanistan, the Taliban’s Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice has rejected the report, stating that the claim of a rise in this phenomenon does not align with the existing realities.<\/p>\n
Saif-ul-Islam Khaibar, spokesperson for the ministry, emphasized that women’s rights in the country are preserved. According to him, the Taliban administration’s leader has ordered that no individual has the right to forcibly marry anyone. He added that since the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan, particularly with the ministry’s activities, “significant achievements” in this area have been made, and the raised claims are largely promotional.<\/p>\n
This comes as Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, announced yesterday that the trend of child marriage in Afghanistan and some war-affected countries is on the rise. According to him, expanding humanitarian needs, widespread poverty, and ongoing conflicts are key factors exacerbating this phenomenon. He emphasized that the UN will strive to protect women and girls, and the global community must also fulfill its responsibilities.<\/p>\n
Inside the country, some experts have called for practical measures to prevent child marriages. Majid Kohistani, a legal expert, said that preventing forced and underage marriages requires broad awareness campaigns through media, social networks, and cooperation with religious scholars and community elders, adding that this responsibility is not solely on the ruling administration.<\/p>\n
These developments arise as the Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue had earlier announced that in the past ten months they have prevented over 1,500 cases of forced marriage across the country.
