Dozens of Afghan girls have sent handwritten letters to Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, urging him not to remain silent in the face of widespread educational deprivation and restrictions against women in Afghanistan, and to take practical action to secure their fundamental rights.<\/p>\n
The letters state that since the Taliban administration came to power, women and girls have been denied education, employment, social freedoms, and other basic rights. One of the letter writers addressed Guterres, saying: “In Afghanistan, the gates of schools and universities remain closed to girls, and we are deprived of the right to education.” She added that Afghan women witness daily the loss of their hope, freedom, and future.<\/p>\n
Another letter described the current situation in the country as “very difficult and worrisome,” emphasizing that severe poverty, unemployment, and the absence of basic freedoms have turned daily life, especially for women, into a crisis. The author of this letter urged the United Nations not to allow relations with the Taliban administration to normalize without a “real and visible improvement” in human rights, particularly women’s rights.<\/p>\n
One girl wrote in her letter: “We live under a regime that views women solely as childbearers and denies them the right to independent life.” She stressed that the Taliban administration has deprived women of their most fundamental human rights, including education, employment, and social participation.<\/p>\n
Several writers referred to the “silent suffering of women,” emphasizing that Afghan girls do not want to be victims of the international community’s silence. They asked the UN Secretary-General to place the voices of girls at the center of discussions and meetings related to Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
