The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that the Gates Foundation is supporting vaccination programs and efforts to eradicate polio in Afghanistan. This was discussed during a meeting between senior officials from the Gates Foundation and UNICEF representatives in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
Tajuddin Owal, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, wrote on his X page on Saturday, May 29, that he had a “very fruitful” meeting with senior Gates Foundation officials about expanding cooperation in the health sector. He emphasized that this collaboration includes primary healthcare, child nutrition, routine immunization, and the polio eradication program.<\/p>\n
The UNICEF representative added that the organization appreciates the Gates Foundation’s support in strengthening health services for children and families. According to him, continued cooperation can improve children’s access to vital healthcare services.<\/p>\n
Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries in the world where polio has not yet been completely eradicated. According to existing statistics, nine positive polio cases were recorded in Afghanistan last year; a fact that indicates that coordinated and sustained efforts are still urgently needed to completely eliminate this disease.<\/p>\n
