Nasir Ahmad Andisha, Afghanistan\u2019s ambassador to Switzerland, has described the Taliban administration\u2019s efforts to take control of Afghan consulates in several European countries, particularly Germany, as concerning and has warned of the resulting security implications. He stated that this process could give the Taliban access to sensitive information about Afghans residing in Europe.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, May 23, Andisha wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page that despite serious human rights concerns, this issue has also drawn the attention of the European Parliament, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and human rights organizations. According to him, entrusting diplomatic missions to an administration with a questionable record on citizens’ rights could have widespread consequences.<\/p>\n
The Afghan ambassador claimed that the Taliban administration has pressured some European governments into a “forced transactional” process by threatening to invalidate passports and withholding consular services. He believes this action amounts to political pressure on host countries as well as Afghan citizens residing there.<\/p>\n
Andisha warned that if the Taliban gain control over consular databases, they will have access to biometric data, addresses, and family information of Afghans living in Europe. He added that such information could be used for threats, coercion, and potential abuse\u2014a matter that has raised serious concerns among human rights activists.<\/p>\n
