During the Cold War, the United States operated 17 military installations in Greenland, which were gradually closed down. Currently, only the Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland remains under US control; this base was formerly known as Thule Air Base.<\/p>\n
Located in Greenland\u2019s territory, which is under Danish sovereignty, this base is considered one of the most important strategic US centers outside its mainland. Its mission includes detecting and tracking intercontinental ballistic missiles through the polar route and supporting US space operations.<\/p>\n
