Richard Bennett, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Afghanistan, has expressed concern over the increasing forced deportations of Afghan refugees from regional countries and the European Union. He emphasized that Afghanistan is not currently a safe country.<\/p>\n
On Friday, May 22, Bennett wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) account that returning Afghans to a country facing a severe human rights crisis is a disturbing and growing trend. He stated that those sent back to Afghanistan face risks of abuse, arbitrary detention, torture, hunger, and even worse conditions.<\/p>\n
The UN special rapporteur highlighted countries’ international human rights obligations, stressing that the principle of non-refoulement must be strictly observed. This principle requires countries not to return individuals to unsafe places where they face serious threats to life or fundamental rights.<\/p>\n
This warning comes as large numbers of Afghan migrants are being returned daily from neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan. Recent reports also indicate efforts by the European Union to engage with the Taliban administration regarding the deportation of Afghan refugees.<\/p>\n
